Man arrested for defacing mural of civil rights leader in Warner Robins

On Friday officers responded to the 100 block of Commercial Circle about a mural being damaged.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — A man is in custody on Monday after defacing a mural of civil rights leader John Lewis, according to a press release from the Warner Robins Police Department.

They say on Friday officers responded to the 100 block of Commercial Circle about a mural being damaged.

The suspect was seen leaving Ace Hardware on Commercial Circle and then walking to the mural of civil rights leader John Lewis.

He spray-painted over parts of the mural and defaced it, the release says.

The man was identified as 32-year-old Quintin Mclin. He is charged with 2nd-degree criminal damage to property.

13WMAZ asked the Warner Robins Police Department if the damage to the mural was motivated by race or another motive and they said they were not aware of a motive at this time.

Rep. John Lewis represented Georgia in Congress from 1987 through his death in 2020.

Before Lewis’ time in Washington, he led marches in the 1960s advocating for the voting rights of Black people, with the most notable being the march in Selma, Alabama. That peaceful march of around 600 peaceful protesters culminated in a violent confrontation with Alabama state troopers now known as “Bloody Sunday.”
