‘I don’t want nobody to steal my stuff’: An elderly Macon man evicted from his affordable housing is sleeping outside
Donald Hargrove was evicted from his rental and is sleeping outside to protect his belongings.
MACON, Ga. — A sign posted by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office on a West Macon home said Donald Hargrove’s rental has been evicted.
Hargrove is 70 years old and sometimes suffers from seizures. He was at Atrium Health Navicent Friday morning at 6:30 a.m. until the late afternoon.
When he got back, he said all of his stuff was sitting in the yard.
“When I turned the corner I could see my furniture sitting on the street,” Hargrove said.
Hargrove said he was living in Section 8 affordable housing and knew he needed to leave soon, so he started to save money.
When he returned from the hospital, he noticed some of his things and $750 were gone.
“Now I can’t move because they stole my money out one of the drawers I had in the house so that left me in a bad shape,” Hargrove said.
Hargrove filed a report with the sheriff’s office for the theft and said he’s waiting for his next social security check in July 3 to move out.
“I tried to them [property manager] that and they said we can’t help you,” Hargrove said.
He said he doesn’t have anywhere to go and doesn’t want to leave his things unattended, so he sleeps outside guarding it.
“I don’t want nobody to steal my stuff what they haven’t already took, so I try to protect myself,” Hargrove said.
The Macon Housing Authority said they’re looking into his case. We called the property manager, Real Property Management Vesta, but have not heard back.
