Georgia College students install 38 solar panels in Baldwin County

Georgia College and State University offered a solar energy class aimed to help you make some green.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Milledgeville just got a little bit greener on Saturday.

In January, Georgia College and State University offered a solar energy class aimed to help you make some green.

On Saturday, those students put their new skills to work by installing 38 solar panels at the Baldwin County Water Treatment Facility.

“Marrying together two programs that don’t often go together – physics and business. So with that, what we’re doing with this grant is putting together a program that trains students on how to design and install solar panel systems as well as how to operate within the business of green energy,” Professor Nicholas Creel said.

10 students from the class installed solar panels.

It was made possible by a grant the university received to give free training to residents.

The city says it will help operation at the water plant plus Nicholas Creel says it helps local families and Milledgeville thrive.

“Part of this is also really seen as a workforce development program for the city itself. So if cities go ahead and use grant programs to fund an educational initiative like this, what they do is they get citizens who earn more and we can pay for better things like cleaner water and cleaner energy,” Creel said.

Students could gain their certification with the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners

The certificate helps them qualify for solar panel jobs with higher pay.
