Dublin residents weigh in on the future of Stubbs Gym

The city is considering two options – tearing down the gym, or redesigning the facility.

DUBLIN, Ga. — The city of Dublin is asking if the community wants to clear the court at Stubbs Gymnasium.

It’s part of their plan to expand the green space on South Drive.

The park’s gym has seen better days, so the city wants to hear from the community before going forward with any construction.

The city is considering two concepts for the Stubbs Park Gymnasium.

The first would be to demolish the gym entirely and add additional green space.

The second would be to gut the gym and redesign the facility so more people can take part in activities there.

Mayor Joshua Kight says listening to what folks have to say is imperative in the early stages.

“What are the most important things to you to see in your neighborhoods, in your neighborhood park?” Kight said. “The number one response was walking trails – a place to get outside that’s safe and beautiful that they can walk and have picnics and have playgrounds for the kids to play in.”

Stubbs Gymnasium is in disrepair. The gym has mold growing across the entire building and worn-out equipment like the basketball hoops and bleachers.

“For the residents’ voices to be heard, that allows them to take apart in the planning process,” Kight said.

The city began improving transportation and walkability around the park in 2022 and 2023.

The first round-about was built at Claxton Dairy Road and Moore Street. City planners wanted to make sure people who walked to the park felt safe passing through the busy roads.

The input meeting for the park is on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 5:30p.m. at Dublin’s City Hall.

If you can’t get to the meeting in person you can go to the city’s website to fill out an input form.
