Howard Middle and High will reopen Tuesday after storms cause power outage and school closure

Deputy Superintendent Katika Lovett says students will be back in school tomorrow.

MACON, Ga. — School will be back in session at both Howard Middle and Howard High School on Tuesday after classes were canceled on Monday.

On Monday morning, the Bibb County School District said the two schools were closed because the campuses were without electricity. A tree fell on wires nearby Sunday night during the storm.

Only Howard Middle and High Schools were impacted. All other Bibb County schools and facilities operated normally.

The Bibb County School District spoke with Georgia Power throughout the night, and decided to close based on information they received this morning.

“We still had information that the schools would actually not have power at the start of the school day and so we made a decision to move forward with school closures based on that,” Deputy Superintendent Katika Lovett said.

Georgia Power said the power at both campuses was restored around 7:15 a.m. They anticipate resuming normal operations on Tuesday for Howard Middle and Howard High.

Lovett said the schools have backup power generators, but not for running school for a full day. She said the district let parents know through their school alert system, social media and news outlets as soon as the decision to close this morning was made.

“We would not be able to move forward with the things such as running lunches, or having the full school day in terms of lights throughout the classrooms,” Lovett said. “We would be able to have lights throughout the corridors and things of that nature but not enough to run an essential school day throughout the day.”
