HOUSTON — The Houston Zoo shared some sad news Sunday morning — its days-old red river hog piglet has died after it was attacked by another hog in the group.
“In the wild, such aggression can occur as animals establish social hierarchies,” the zoo explained in a post. “Our team is monitoring the hog family. Thanks for your support.”
The news comes just days after the zoo introduced the new piglet on Friday. The zoo said red river hog Pinto had given birth to her first piglet on Wednesday. They said the piglet would spend time behind the scenes to bond with the mother before going on exhibit together.
“We appreciate your understanding and support during this challenging time,” the Zoo’s message said Sunday morning. “Our dedicated animal care team continues to monitor our red river hog family closely to ensure their well-being. Thank you for being part of our Zoo family.”
