Northwestern Indiana sheriff’s deputy has died after being shot by alleged hostage-taker

Corporal Brandon Schreiber was helping Illinois deputies chase an alleged hostage-taker when he was shot.

SHELDON, Ill. — The Newton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Corporal Brandon Schreiber has died after being shot on Sept. 1.

“We regret to inform you of the passing of Corporal Schreiber earlier this morning, 9-11-24,” the Newton County Sheriff’ Office posted on Facebook. “Arrangements are pending.”

Shreiber was helping the sheriff’s department of Iroquois County, Illinois with a hostage situation. They chased the suspect into Indiana, which is when Shreiber and the Newton County Sheriff’s Department joined the chase.

Eventually the chase circled back to Illinois and crashed in the town of Sheldon. Police say 37-year-old Andrew Roselius started shooting, hitting Shreiber.

Roselius was hit by return fire and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Illinois State Police is now leading the investigation.

Schreiber was initially taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital but was then flown to the Carle Trauma Center, where he was in critical condition.
