Hurricane Helene Impacts | Full list of school closings and other cancellations
Wheeler County was the first school district to announce that its closing.
MACON, Ga. — The 13WMAZ weather team officially issued a Weather Impact Alert on Tuesday for all of Thursday and Friday morning, as Hurricane Helene is expected to hit Central Georgia.
The storm is expected to grow into a Category 3 hurricane when it makes landfall and remain as a Category 1 hurricane when it reaches Central Georgia
As such, counties are beginning to announce school closures. As more are announced, 13WMAZ will update this story.
Full Updated List of Cancellations
County: Wheeler
- Cancellation Dates: Thursday, Sept. 26 and Friday, Sept. 27
- School will be closed on both days “due to anticipated heavy rains and winds” from Hurricane Helene.
- School will be back to normal for students and staff on Monday, Sept. 30
County: Wilcox
- Early release on Thursday, Sept. 26, closed on Friday, Sept. 27
- School will dismiss early at 1 p.m. on Thursday due to “possible inclement weather”
- Schools will be closed all day on Friday
County: Peach
- Cancellation Dates: Thursday, Sept. 26 and Friday, Sept. 27
- School will be closed for students and staff on Thursday and Friday “due to anticipated severe weather.”
- All extracurricular activities are also canceled for both Thursday and Friday
County: Pulaski
- Cancellation Dates: Friday, Sept. 27
- School will be closed on Friday due to severe weather
- The district is expecting the storm to be out of the area by the early afternoon and will still have its football game and homecoming, as a result.
County: Twiggs
- Cancellation Dates: Thursday, Sept. 26 and Friday, Sept. 27
- School will be closed both on Thursday and Friday due to expected heavy rains, flooding and tropical-force winds
- All activities, including homecoming events, will be canceled on both days and will be rescheduled at a later date.
County: Dooly
- Cancellation Dates: Thursday, Sept. 26 and Friday, Sept. 27
- All students, faculty and staff should not report to school on Thursday and Friday
- All after-school activities are canceled, with the Dooly County vs Montgomery County football game being moved to Saturday, Sept. 28
County: Hancock
- Cancellation Dates: Early release on Thursday, Sept. 26, closed on Friday, Sept. 27
- School will dismiss early at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday. They are closed all day Friday.
- All school activities are canceled on Friday
County: Dublin City Schools
- Schools remain open on Thursday, Sept. 26, but all after-school activities are canceled on Thursday, Sept. 26.
- Schools will remain open on Thursday. There are no further updates as of now
County: Monroe
- Early release on Thursday, Sept. 26, closed on Friday, Sept. 27
- School will dismiss early at 12:30 p.m. and school is closed on Friday, Sept. 27
- All after school activities on Thursday, including the MPHS Homecoming Parade, have been cancelled.
County: Wilkinson
- Cancellation Dates: Thursday, Sept. 26 and Friday, Sept. 27
- School will be closed on Thursday and Friday due to “anticipated severe weather” from Hurricane Helene.
- After-school activities, including homecoming activities like the homecoming court presentation and the homecoming game will be rescheduled to October.
- Homecoming activities will be on Friday, Oct. 11. The game will be on Thursday, Oct. 17
County: Dodge
- Cancellation Dates: Closed Friday, Sept. 27
