‘You can’t explain it’ | Treutlen families reeling after Helen hits Central Georgia

The damage didn’t end with the storm. A Soperton police officer said they arrested someone for trying to steal a TV. That person is in Treutlen County Jail now.

SOPERTON, Ga. — In Treutlen County, there are downed trees and power lines across the county.

County Emergency Management Agency Director Justin McNure said there are over 300 downed trees.

Among the buildings damaged is a Farmers Home Furniture store. The entire roof ripped off last night due to Helene.

And alongside the building, there are power lines that have fallen on top of the building.

A Soperton police officer said people stopped by all day to see what’s left of the furniture store. Sandra Baker lives nearby and said she used to shop at Farmers Home.

She said it’s hard to see how much the people around her have lost.

“I never seen anything in Soperton, Georgia like this,” she said. “I mean, it’s a lot of family has lost a lot of stuff. My dad has lost his farm and it’s just really, I mean, you can’t explain it.”

And the damage did not end with the storm. A city of Soperton police officer said they arrested someone for trying to steal a TV from inside. That person was taken to Treutlen County Jail. The officer said there were other attempts to steal items from inside, but those people were stopped before they got the chance.

“The loss that these guys has lost in they furniture store and it’s amazing how I would have never thought that it would have been this whole building, everything demolished from this this farmer furniture,” she said.

The Soperton police officer at Farmers Home said they are guarding the taped off store to discourage any more potential thieves.
