Cause of death released for Loganville teen found dead in the woods

Campos’ ex-boyfriend, Jesus Monroy, is accused of killing the 16-year-old, who was seven months pregnant at the time of her death.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — New details have been released in the cause of death for a Loganville 16-year-old mother-to-be found dead in the woods over the summer.

An autopsy report lists the cause of death for Mia Campos as “asphyxia due to neck compression.”

Campos’ ex-boyfriend, Jesus Monroy, is accused of killing Campos, who was seven months pregnant at the time of her death. He was initially arrested after Campos’ death and charged with providing false statements to police about the case, but those charges were later upgraded.

He now faces charges of malice murder, felony murder, feticide and aggravated assault in connection to the teen’s death, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The last time Mia Campos was seen was on July 14 on a doorbell camera. The family told officers that the teen had left their house the night before with an unknown person. When she didn’t come home, her family used a cell phone app to locate her. They found her body just two minutes away from their home around 1 a.m. July 15.

Campos’ family said Monroy helped them search for Mia.

“I knew he was guilty that day,” the teen’s father, Eduardo Campos, said. “He didn’t even cry for her son, so to that point you’re guilty because he didn’t want it from the beginning.”

Now, the family is pushing for justice for their daughter.

“If he’s guilty, I’m gonna make sure that he’s guilty,” Eduardo said.

Monroy was granted a $50,000 bond in August and bonded out. As part of his bond, Monroy must stay at home with an ankle monitor. He’s ordered to have no contact with potential witnesses in the case and had to surrender his passport after court.
