Lyft driver shot on the job while picking up random rider in Atlanta

The shooting happened in the evening on September 30. After three weeks in the hospital, the 40-year-old is still healing with bullets in his body.

ATLANTA — A Lyft driver leaves a stark warning after being targeted, shot and almost killed on the job.

Atlanta Police are investigating after the shooting that happened around 6 p.m. on Sept. 30 at 1314 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. Marvin Motton, the random target, is now left with two bullets in his body.

“He could’ve gotten my face. He could’ve gotten my chest. I mean, my window was down — all the way down. So I’m lucky,” Motton said.

The shooting leaves the 40-year-old marked forever. He was hit twice below the waist trying to avoid the gunfire.

“With the doctors pulling my skin together, it just feels like something is pulling my leg. It’s definitely a struggle,” Motton explained.

The random attack while trying to pick up a passenger left him traumatized. Motton says a man in a dark grey Infiniti fired at him from the passenger side of the car when he was trying to pull into the apartment complex to pick up a woman.

“When I have flashbacks, I actually see the person shooting the gun at me and, like, me grabbing my leg, panicking, looking around because I didn’t know what was going on. It happened so fast,” Motton said.

All he could think of was driving himself to the hospital. He tried but couldn’t make it and called 911.

“I told them I’m bleeding very bad and I need help. They said to hold on someone would be right there. Police got there first and applied pressure,” Motton described.

After three weeks in the hospital, he’s finally out — but hasn’t fully healed.

“After everything settling down I just keep thinking, ‘Who could that be?’ If he’s not caught I still want to know why you did this to me,” Motton said.

While he wants whoever hurt him off the street, Atlanta Police still have yet to make any arrests. If you live nearby, saw or heard anything, detectives want to hear from you.

“We have to stay vigilant. It can happen to anybody,” Motton said.

Despite having to struggle through his pain, Motton is picking up Lyft again and keeping his eyes on more than just the road. The only reason he’s driving again is because he can’t work his regular job while he heals and is trying to make up the time he’s lost in the hospital to pay for his medical bills. He is fundraising to help. If you’d like to help you can here.
