Man dead after shooting in Fort Valley, shooter arrested for murder, release says
The release said Fort Valley Police responded to a possible intruder shot, then found a woman crying near a gun on her front lawn.
FORT VALLEY, Ga. — A Byron man is dead after a shooting in Fort Valley early Saturday morning, according to a Fort Valley Police Department press release.
The release said that officers arrived at a residence within the 400 block of Pecan Avenue due to a gunshot fired at an intruder at someone’s home. When they arrived, they found a man shot and a woman crying in the front yard of her home near a gun.
According to Coroner Kerry Rooks, the man shot was Quinton Owens, 67, who was transported to Atrium Health Navicent. Rooks said he was pronounced dead around 3 a.m.
The release said that after an investigation, officers determined that Shawn Evans, 55, shot Owens, who was allegedly intruding into her house. They charged her with murder and discharging a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Fort Valley Chief of Police DJ Flores said that while Evans said that Owens was breaking into her home. However, Flores said that after an investigation, they don’t believe this to be the case.
Evans, according to the release, was transported to the Peach County Detention Center without further incident. Rooks said Owens’ autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
