Election angst? | Central Georgians struggling with anxiety as election approaches

According to the American Psychological Association, 69% of Americans adults are struggling with anxiety for the election.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — For first-time voter Jackson Mullis, figuring out the right candidate to vote for gave him some anxiety.

Mullis, 21, says misinformation was a big barrier for deciding which candidate was the right choice.

“I found credible sources. I found sources from people that I trust and never steer me wrong. I listened to them and listen what they had to say. And I did research on my own,” he said.

He says he made his vote based on a candidate who will support the military, since his family is in the military.

Elijah Jones went to vote today and he says he found this election difficult to parse, as well.

“I am just trying to learn all the point of views from both sides, and it was difficult to decide,” Jones said.

Jones says he looked for a side that would support him and the people.

He said he struggled with both candidates, and it made him a little nervous, but he chose the candidate that would understand his situation.

Nikki Hemphill is a mother who brought her son Silas to vote with her. She says she wanted him to see what it was like.

“It’s a little nerve racking yes, but I’ve been pretty decided with who I am gonna pick since the election started,” Hemphill says.

Bruce Conn is a psychotherapist who wants people to know some tips to keep yourself less anxious during the election.

He says to “step away from the screen, get into the actual reality of your life.”

He says he also wants people to remember this election might feel all or nothing but it really isn’t. He says we’ve had bad politicians before and we will get through the election.

He says we have to choose joy and avoid cynicism
