World War I veteran’s gravestone vandalized in Jones County, sheriff’s office says

According to volunteer Wesley Connell, Veteran Ed Morgan served in the depot brigade and had a wife and child.

JONES COUNTY, Ga. — The Jones County Sheriff’s Office is working to find out who vandalized a veterans’ grave site off Highway 11.

Sheriff Butch Reese said that on Saturday night, an unidentified person cut down a tree and damaged the headstone of a World War I veteran.

The grave site belongs to WWI veteran Ed Morgan, who according to volunteer Wesley Connell, was with the depot brigade and had a wife and child.

Connell said that he, alongside other volunteers, cleaned the area when they found the gravestone a few years ago. He said that they’d like to put a permanent flag pole and various lights at the site so people can come by and see Morgan’s grave.

Connell wasn’t sure why someone would vandalize the gravesite but is ready to make it look great again.

“We got a lot of people wanting to donate trees and materials and stuff to make it presentable again,” he said. “So we’re gonna make something good out of it. We just like to find out who did it.”

Anyone with more information on the vandalism can call the Jones County Sheriff’s Office at 478-986-3489
