Gas leak in Downtown Atlanta after ‘large line ruptured’; Georgia Capitol being evacuated, streets closed

The incident occurred Wednesday morning.

ATLANTA — A gas leak is impacting Downtown Atlanta on Wednesday morning, including the Georgia Capitol, after a “large line ruptured” according to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.

At 10:15 a.m., 11Alive’s Liza Lucas reported the Capitol was being evacuated.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety said a construction crew was working on the corner of Piedmont Ave. and MLK Jr. Dr. (which have been closed), “when a gas main was struck.”

AFRD said it was “monitoring buildings in the area, which includes the Capitol and the (Georgia State) MARTA station.”

“Our crews are now taking readings of the air quality in the impacted area. Piedmont Ave near MLK is shut down. Atl Gas is en route,” AFRD added. Georgia DPS said: “Vehicle and pedestrian traffic are being redirected around the affected area as Atlanta Fire and Atlanta Gas light assess the line.”

11Alive’s Liza Lucas is on scene and posted video of the response.
